)
"an
accuser, a slanderer" (from diaballo,
"to accuse, to malign"), is one of the names of Satan.
From it the English word "Devil" is derived, and
should be applied only to Satan, as a proper name. Daimon,
"a demon," is frequently, but wrongly, [SIC] translated
"devil;" it should always be translated "demon,"
as in the RV
margin.
DEVIL OR SATAN; IS THERE A DIFFERENCE? The nomenclatures “the Devil” and “the Satan” are interchangeable in the Bible. The devil comes from diabolos and Satan is from satanos but they BOTH are applied to the prince of the evil in the world. In fact, the LXX uses Devil in the book of Job whereas the Hebrew uses Satan (e.g., King James Version of the Hebrew). For example, in the NT Jesus calls the Devil, Satan, during the Temptations of Jesus.
“ And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. … And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Luke 4:5, 8).
WHO
THEN IS THE DEVIL of THE BIBLE?
A
major DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “DEVIL” AND “DEMON”:
There
is one "Devil," but there are many demons.
WHO
IS THE
DEVIL?
[He is “the Accuser”]
Being
the malignant enemy of God and man,
he
accuses
man
to God,
Job
1:6-11;
2:1-5;
Revelation
12:9,10
,
and God
to man,
Genesis
3
(with
Eve).
He
afflicts
men
with physical
sufferings,
Acts
10:38
.
Being himself sinful, 1
John 3:8
,
he instigated
man to sin,
Genesis
3
,
and tempts
man to do evil,
Ephesians
4:27;
6:11
,
encouraging him thereto by deception, Ephesians
2:2
.
DEATH
has
been brought into the world by sin; the "Devil" had the
power of death, but Christ through His own death, has triumphed
over him, and will bring him to nought, Hebrews
2:14;
the devil's power over death is intimated in his struggle with
Michael over the body of Moses. Jude
1:9
.
Judas, who gave
himself over to
the "Devil," was
so identified with him (?),
that the Lord described him as such (described as “a”
devil, not “the” devil, John
6:70).
“The
devil
having
now put
into the
heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him”
John
13:2.
“The Devil” “put”
into
Judas' heart.
PRIDE.
As the "Devil" raised himself in pride against God and
fell under condemnation, so believers are warned against similar
sin, 1
Timothy 3:6;
for them he lays snares, ver. 7, seeking to devour them as
a roaring lion,
(1
Peter 5:8). Those
who fall into his snare may be recovered therefrom unto the will
of God, 2
Timothy 2:26
,
"having
been taken captive by him
(i.e.,
by the 'Devil')."
CAN
BE RESISTED.
If we can according to Scripture
resist
him,
then
we are free
moral agents
to
make the decisions of actions and to act thereby. If
believers resist
he
will flee from them, James
4:7.
The Devil has never “possessed” anyone in the sense
of controlling him beyond his ability to resist; even in the NT.
HIS
DESTINY.
His doom is the lake of fire, Matthew
25:41;
Revelation
20:10
.
If
there is no definite article (o'), the noun “DEVIL”
is applied to slanderers, false accusers, and not “the”
devil; e.g., 1
Timothy 3:11;
2
Timothy 3:3;
Titus
2:3.

to a specific person or entity that "stands with others
before the Lord" (Job 2:1). "Demon" refer to other
entities.
History
of development of English word “devil.”
“devil”
(n.) Anglicized diabolos
in
the English.
Old
English word was
deofol "a
devil, a subordinate evil spirit afflicting humans;" also,
in Christian theology, "the Devil, a powerful spirit of evil
otherwise known as Satan," from Late
Latin diabolus
(also the source of Italian
diavolo,
French diable,
Spanish diablo.
The
Late Latin word is from Ecclesiastical Greek diabolos,
which in Jewish and Christian use was "the Devil, Satan,"
and which in general use meant "accuser, slanderer"
(thus it was a scriptural loan-translation of Hebrew Satan). It
is an agent noun from Greek diaballein "to
slander, attack," literally "to throw across,"
from dia "across, through" + ballein
"to throw".
Jerome
(in last of the fourth century after Jesus) re-introduced “Satan”
in Latin bibles, and English translators have used both words
in different measures. In Vulgate, as in Greek, diabolus
and dæmon were distinct, but they
have merged in English and other Germanic languages.
Meaning
of "false god, heathen god" in English is from c. 1200
AD. Sense of "diabolical person, person resembling a devil
or demon in character" is from late 12thc.
